September 19th marked the final episode of Boogie Woogie’s Mummy Championship for 2009. The series that was much awaited and many mummy’s wanting to participate, many in abundance who went through the auditions and finally few of them getting selected, saw the curtain for one last time till the next series starts all over again. Mummy’s Championships was loved by all, it also intrigued lots of interest in newer mummy’s all over the world and many messages and emails got poured in to this fan site wanting to be part of next mummy’s competition for 2010. We “this blog” as usual guided them with what they were suppose to do.
Coming to the Grand Finale’s super hungama episode, it was interesting to watch that the finale was divided into two parts. In the first part of the show, all four mothers were suppose to dance the style they specialize in. Judges informed that they will be eliminating one mother out of the four finalists and the remaining three will compete in second round. As soon as this piece of information was told the only one word that came to my mind was “WHY??” I thought this was really a weird format to kick one of the contestant out right on the D day. But then judges word is judges word right?
Soon enough the music was played and one after another the final four mummy’s started coming on stage to perform in their own special style. The first mother who came was Saba Bari who wore a red color outfit and danced Bharatnatyam on western music. The second mother who came on the stage was Ritu Gupta who wore a purple and silver color outfit and danced western on song Shano shano from movie “Yuvraj”. The third finalist mother Sonia Dias made an entry in her hip hop style and wore a black and white outfit. The last finalist – Saili Desai came in Bollywood style wearing pink and green outfit. And then all four mummy’s together danced on Boogie Woogie stage together and it was for the first time that they were performing together. It was beautiful.
After the performance as per the judges, one was suppose to get eliminated and that rang the nervous bell not only among mothers but also in Boogie Woogie audiences. Jaaved Jaafferi’s comments were “bahut acha kiya, expressions were fantastic but one has to get eliminated so the results will be after the break”.
After the break and a zillion advertisements, judges informed that the marks were equal between two mothers who scored the lowest and they were thinking which mother they should eliminate. Smile was lost from all the mothers and they stood silent awaiting the deadly results. But the results got a breath of fresh air to know all the four mummy’s will compete and no mummy will be eliminated. What a relief!!! I have a strong feeling that the judges were joking seriously
The first mother to start the grand finale performance was Saba Bari who performed pure Kathak on song “laga chunri mein daag”. She wore pink and green outfit. Saba’s performance when you start to watch makes you feel “okay so she is performing Kathak as her final number and then suddenly she takes you by surprise. She dances Kathak like you haven’t seen before on
Mummy’s Championship. Her performance especially her non stop faster steps takes the cake and should be applauded. Many will automatically find themselves comparing Saba with the reputed Kathak dancers of India. A beautiful and graceful piece she performs which takes your breath away especially the second half of her performance is unforgettable. Her expressions were superb. As they say “save your best for the last”, Saba did saved her best of best for the last that manages to get all applauds by dozens. She stood clear and wide in her genre and proved that she is no ordinary mummy who came in to have just fun. She meant serious business! Saba’s kathak should be counted in Boogie Woogie’s finest performances and I am sure it has made the judges feel proud of the talent that was presented on the prestigious stage. The choreographers should equally be applauded for their fine choreography and also for training the mothers the best. I thoroughly enjoyed and so should you. MUST MUST WATCH!!! Coming to the judges, the song laga chunri mein daag is Jaaved Jaafferi’s one of the favorites. He said Saba performance was graceful and she executed it very well. Her expressions were very good.
The second finalist mother who performed was Ritu Gupta. Ritu wore a black and red color outfit and danced on medley. The remixing that was done for Ritu’s performance was exceptional. Ritu danced beautifully and gave in a very entertaining performance. Her dance especially at Usha Uthup’s number was fantastic. We could also enjoy every beat, every rhythm with Ritus steps. The change of music and change in steps was executed very well. It all came out professional. The after performance talk brought mix of comments from Jaaved. He loved the enthusiasm but felt the choreography was a little less. He did like the overall presentation and enjoyed it good.
The next finalist mother to perform was Saili Desai and her clippings prior to her performance really made me nervous where she was shown
fainting on the stage. Anyway coming back to Saili’s performance, she wore a beautiful blue color lehanga and danced on song “Nimbooda” from movie Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam. Saili looked pretty and danced prettily. Her expressions were fantastic. Her faster steps with faster music were superb. Few of the Boo dancers joined her for few seconds and that looked good too. Saili’s energy was great and she smiled through out her performance. Her closure made her do rotations and soon after the performance ended, she fell down in dizziness. Boo dancers brought her water and she was taken care by the Boogie Woogie team. The after performance talk brought the funniest comment by the judges when they asked Saili “Khatta khaane ke liye aapka jee karta hai kya”. Jaaved’s expert comments based on her performance were that she did not use all of her beats well but she did show lot of growth in her performance. They also commented that Saili is like Michael Jackson who when talks no one will know that he can be a powerful performer and the same way Saili’s talent brought surprises to all as many didn’t expect that she would reach finals. Well said!!
The last finalist mother was Sonia Dias and she literally made me cry with her performance. I was sure she would dance a hip hop number as her final performance and was surprise to see something else on the stage. But then there are many times in life that you would want to go after the trophy or money but then only once in a life time you would get a chance to speak your heart out, to be yourself and forget the technicalities. Sometimes it is necessary to dance for oneself rather then for the world. Sonia’s performance was such! She dedicated her final number to her late husband who she lost on her birthday soon after a week of Mummy’s Championships had started. It was painful for all Boogie
Woogie fans to learn of this tragedy and the entire scene came fresh in front of eyes in form of her performance. Sonia’s performance started with she receiving flowers and greetings from friends and then receiving a phone call with news of her husband’s death. Her expressions and her crying tears your heart apart. It makes you salute this woman who even after the big tragedy gathered herself up and came back to Boogie Woogie stage to complete her task and her husbands dreams. Sonia’s performance consisted of two songs, one – dil mile bina hi tut gaye, and two – shayad yahi pyar hai. You will end up watching the entire performance with moist eyes. It is a MUST MUST WATCH PERFORMANCE. Performing something different that is not ones forte requires guts but also conveys that the bigger trophy for Sonia was to dedicate her last number to her husband as her biggest trophy. Well done Sonia – we are all very proud of you! Coming to judges comments, Jaaved said Sonia didn’t look entirely comfortable performing the contemporary modern dance but her expressions were great and she did conveyed her feelings. Sonia thanked the judges and the Boogie Woogie team for being with her in her tough time and it was because of Boogie Woogie that she could gather herself up. She also was happy to find three great brothers.
After a flashback, the results were announced and honestly this time we really didn’t had to wait for the judges to tell us who the winner champion mother was. It was clearly visible as one mother stood tall enough above other mothers.
The PROUD 2009 BOOGIE WOOGIE MUMMY’S CHAMPION is SABA BARI!! Way to go Champion – Keep it up!!
Congratulations to Saba and we wish her a dance like her final performance forever. We do hope to see more such finer performances by her soon on Boogie Woogie. On behalf of all Boogie Woogie India’s members, visitors and special mothers who were part of the auditions, we congratulate Saba. We also wish other mothers – Sonia, Ritu and Saili the very best of best for all their future endeavors. We do wish to see you back on Boogie Woogie soon and pray that all of your dreams be fulfilled. You will be in our hearts for a long long time!
