audition_pic Recently a lot of emails have been pouring in asking how to participate in Sony’s Boogie Woogie or what is the best way to get enrolled for an audition. Many know auditions are mostly over in most of the places for this year but this news should not make you feel low as the door to show case your talent is not closed yet.

1 Boogie Woogie Rules and regulations ask you to register for an audition in your nearby location but for some reason you are not able to register then there is nothing to worry about. You should send a video CD of your performance to the Mumbai office and you will be called upon based on your talent. I wrote about video CD in my previous articles too and it should be treated important. Why? Here is a scoop – the auditions that were held in different cities in India were mostly held by the Boogie Woogie team for recording purpose to be screened later. The results were not announced instantly. The participants were videotaped based on 2 minute of their performance and were sent back. These videos were or will be screened by Sony’s Boogie Woogie and will be called upon later if they meet the talent criteria. So you see whether you went for the audition or send them a video CD, it is going to be the same thing. What I see is - there is still time to show what you got and this is what I love about Boogie Woogie – nobody looses.

77D_boogie_woogie_show-2 So if you were part of the audition and are waiting for the results to come, then please wait patiently as they say patience bear sweet fruit. But if you desperately wanted to go for an audition and did not get through to all those busy lines or unanswered lines and missed out on a face to face audition – don’t worry. You still got time. Do this:

  • Get yourself in a costume.
  • Get some help and make a Video CD of your performance.
  • Choose a song that does not belong to the companies that we talked about yesterday.
  • Choose a song that does not have any vulgar words in it.
  • Make sure your CD is good quality - meaning a video and sound  should both be clear.
  • Label your CD neatly with your name, song that you are performing and the movie it belongs to along with singer, Music Company.
  • Write a cover letter showing your interest in audition for boogie woogie and along with your application, mail your Video CD to:

Email: feedback.set@setindia.com

  • Last but not least - Pray and stay positive!

Congratulations0[1] When you video tape, tape in sufficient light. Also make sure no one is talking in middle of your performance. See that there is no disturbance. Please don’t get diverted while performing. Keep your expressions in place. Make sure your facial expressions and your movements are all in sync with the song that you have chosen to perform. Think about this - while recording your video CD, in case you go wrong, you can always correct that. That is so much better then the one time chance you would get in face to face auditions. So prepare well, do your best and leave the rest to God.

27We do have Boogie Woogie phone numbers in contact but I would strongly advice NOT to call them. They don’t encourage phone calls and plus you don’t want to do anything that might irritate them and ruin your chances. I listed their “official website” and also their email address above for your convenience. You will always find their information handy on this site.

Lastly - remember, if you need any advice, suggestion or help, feel free to reach out to me. This site is solely a fans site, it is your site and you are free to discuss anything. Good Luck!!

As we are aware that whether you go for an audition or to perform in Boogie Woogie show, you are required to carry your own music CD. The song that will be performed needs to be carried by the participant and will not be provided by the Boogie Woogie Show. But this is not all – there is more towards it. Please read below carefully what the show talks about the music CD. Hope this will help you in preparing well:

Boogie Woogie Rules and Regulations say:

“Participants shall carry their own audio CD which is in good working condition for the purposes of rendering performance in the Auditions. It is advisable to carry more then one audio CD in case of any failure in the functioning of audio CD at the time of performance. Participants shall submit the audio CD to the team deployed by R&N TV for Auditions. The length of the song must not exceed 2 minutes and it should be on an audio CD format. MP3 audio is not accepted. The song choice must be Hindi or regional language Indian songs. All Indian songs available on standard Indian music labels are only acceptable. For Participants submitting a medley, the songs must be edited properly. Un-edited or badly edited songs shall lead to disqualification of participants. At the time of submission of audio CD, the participants must write down his/her name, the name of the song along with the album/ film from which it is taken, and the name of music company which has published the music of the film/album. Participants are prohibited from playing music owned and copyrighted by T-Series, Yash Raj, Big Music and any international music labels for their audition performance.”

Well I think they put the rule above pretty crisp and clear. Let’s talk about couple of the points which I see it as very important:

dos_and_donts •    MP3’s are NOT allowed. Even though MP3’s are very popular and easily available over the net they still pose difficulty sometimes in playing them on many music systems. Many music systems do not play the MP3’s right. They get stuck or are not compatible like for instance when I download MP3’s on a CD and play on one of my music system; it plays the first few songs and will stop. The specification of that music player did say it is MP3 compatible but it is beyond me to understand why the music stops in middle. It does not happen on other music players. And we don’t know what kind of music system that will be there during audition so please carry an audio CD with you. Now if you have your song only in MP3 format, you can always burn that song on an audio CD. I will soon give details of how to burn an audio CD which will be in another article (it will help you in case you don’t know already.)

colgao_lamp •    Boogie Woogie has listed few companies that you CANNOT play their music. T-Series, Yash Raj, Big Music and any international music labels. Reason? Copyright and other legal issues. Many of these companies have a rule that you cannot play their music without proper rights or permissions. I know Yash Raj Productions don’t even let the actors to perform on the music of their films that they acted in. Sharukh Khan is never seen singing or performing on any song that belongs to Yash Raj banner. They have some crazy rules and so does the other companies. I would say please do your homework well. Choose a song that does not belong to any of the above labels. You definitely don’t want to prepare one great performance and later you come to know that you are disqualified. So please stay away as far as possible from the above labels.

Remember – It is always better to be safe then sorry!

Are you ready to talk about a new dance style today or the Diwali sweets still too heavy for a discussion? Well maybe the topic will help us in digesting in all the indulging that we did during the holiday.

As we talk about one form of dancing with the sole motive to be little more knowledgeable, we move back to the western dance after covering “Kathak” last week. Today we shall talk about “Tap Dancing”. Tap dancing is great to watch to and I personally feel is an art. We will find many forms of dancers everywhere probably in every other home but you will not find that many tap dancers due to the fact that it is not only tough but also requires great amount of talent.

What is Tap Dancing? Tap Dancing is more popular as an American Dance where it is fondly known as American theatrical dance. It is a dance that is distinguished by percussive footwork that is basically done by precise and in rhythmic pattern on the floor. It can further be categorized by different steps such as Brush, Flap, Shuffle, Ball change and Cramp Roll.

History of Tap Dance:

Tap Dance is seen originating in different dancing styles of various countries. It can be seen in Irish Solo step dance, the English clog dance and also in African dance movements. It was originated in the early 18th century. It was more popular in the southen United States among the slaves. It further merged as 19th century folk dance where the modern descendants took the dance to a new level which included buck and wing dancing and southern United States clogging. Both the dancing styles were performed wearing leather soul shoes. This slave dance was adapted in theatres in 1828 and it gave a new meaning to tap dancing. Thomas “Daddy” Rice was the first one to make it popular as a theatre dance. Later in 19th century it was part of showboat routines and minstrel shows where two techniques were mainly popularized as fast style of dancing in wooden sole shoes and later the same was replaced with a smooth leather sole style and made it more famous by George Primrose. These styles later coalesced and in 1920’s saw metal plates or taps been added to the leather soled shoes.

Tap dance became very popular in 1920’s and in 1930’s among the black dancers and they contributed to the development towards this new style of dancing. Black dance teams became immense popular and also consisted of acrobatic movements in their tap dancing. John bubbles later popularized a more slower and syncopated style of dancing.

Some of the popular dancing teams that belonged to that era were Harold Daniels and Leslie Irvin who were more popularly known as Slap and Happy, Stump and Stumpy were James Cross and Harold Cromer. The music later accompanied was jazz and it provided rhythmic complexity. Bill Bojangles Robinson became America’s most famous tap dancer. Gene Kelly added movements from ballet and modern dance to it in 1950’s.

Different forms of Tap Dancing:

Clogg Dance – Clogg dance is the original form of tap dance where they danced with wooden “Clogg” shoes.
English Style - A very light and elegant dancing style that is more classical in its way.
Soft Shoe dance – Engles style of dance but without the taps. It is often danced with wooden taps.
American Style – It is very jazzy dance and more down into the floor with lots of heel work and strongly syncopated.
Sand Shuffle – This style of dancing is throwing a bit of sand on the floor and dances on it. The working technique is quite different as it is based on hits and slides.

If you are not a Tap dancer and would like to learn the basic tap dancing method then here are some basic steps that you can practice:

Step1 - Put on your tap shoes and some cool music.
Step2 - Start by tapping your toe to the beat. Do this faster and faster to build strength.
Step3 - Brush the ball of one foot forward and then back to shuffle.
Step4 - Step back on the ball of your right foot and step on your left (or vice versa) to do the ball change.
Step5 - Brush forward with the ball of your foot and step on the ball of it for the flap.
Step6 - Do a cramproll by jumping up and landing with your feet. Do this in the following order: Land first on the ball of your right foot, then the ball of your left foot, followed by your right heel and, finally, your left heel.
Step7 - Step with your right foot and touch your left toe behind it for the step toe.
Step8 - Learn the stomp. It’s similar to stepping, but you hit your foot on the ground to stomp and then lift it off (placing no weight on the foot when you stomp).
Step9 - Perform the shuffle hop. Do the basic shuffle with your right foot and, leaving your right foot in the air, jump up.

Here is a must watch video - Enjoy!

10 Last weekend “Diwali Special Episode” witnessed all the judges in Desi attire. And I must say they were all looking fabulous in those outfits. All three judges Javed, Naved and Ravi (in alphabetical order) are probably the favorite judges to majority of the viewers of reality shows. As a fan, I was all smiles seeing them in colors and in traditional clothes. It was wonderful to see them in Achkans, Sherwani and long scarfs.

We are fans and as we notice different things, we praise, feel happy and also sometimes we voice if something we don’t like. Though, I haven’t yet observed something that hasn’t appealed to me regarding these judges. Touch Wood!! We love them and so everything that we feel and the way we "act" make sense – just needs to be seen from a fans perspective. They say everything is fair in fans world because they rule with their hearts!!

With the above concept in mind, I dare to say to all three “Real Heroes” – Please continue to wear the traditional clothing more often. We also love to see you in Reds, Blues, and other brighter colors too. They add so much more charm to the show then the usual blacks, and beige’s.

Remember, You guys – ROCK!!

1 Boogie Woogie, the show that has given a platform to many talented dancers is all set to launch its new season. But this new season will come with an addition in the panel of judges. Veteran choreographer Saroj Khan will also judge the show.

A well placed source from the show informed, “The new season will have Saroj Khan as a judge. It is likely to launch in the last week of November. Until now Ravi Behl, Javed Jaffery and Naved Jaffery have been judging the show. Though Saroj Khan is on the panel of judges, she will not be present in all the episodes due to her busy schedule. Along with a new judge, the new season will also have a spanking new set. The current season of the show is still on air and as soon as this season ends, the new season will start at the same time slot.”

Saroj Khan said, “Yes, I will be judging the new series of Boogie Woogie. It is a good show and as far as dance is concerned, it is the only show that has real talent. Participants in the show are the real people. Here, I won’t have to judge fake people and give about eight out of ten marks to a contestant who doesn’t deserve it.”

2 Talking about this new season Ravi Behl says, “I am feeling exactly the way I felt at the start of the previous seasons. We will do our jobs and whether the show turns out to be good or bad, will be decided by the audience. We don’t plan much as our show is a genuine show. One has never seen judges breaking the tables or other such drama happening in Boogie Woogie. Our interaction with the contestants and their parents is for real. Everything happens on the spot. For example, we have not planned whether Sarojji will dance or not. If someone requests her to dance, she might dance. Everything out here comes from the heart.”

When asked about Saroj Khan judging the show, he says, “She is a veteran. We know her since a very long time. When I was doing films, she was the choreographer of all my films. It is an honour to have her on our show.”
